Papers and Projects--Information and Guidelines

First Art History/Analytic Paper due October 20th or 27th:
(for AH credit)

Papers should address issues and topics based on the films
screened and discussed in class. Your paper is expected to
reflect your own critical thinking about the film/s and include
independent research and readings beyond those already on
the syllabus.

Topics for the paper:

Expressionist film and Cabinet of Caligari
Dada and Leger's Ballet Mecanique
Dada and Man Ray's films
Dada and Clair's Entr'acte
Abstract cinema of Richter and/or Eggeling
Animated films of Kentridge
Stan Brakhage and the abstract painted films
Surrealism and Bunuel's Chien Andalou

If you want to write on another subject related to what we have covered, please write to me before so we can discuss.

In your paper be sure to:

1) discuss the historical and cultural context of the film;

2) describe what was innovative and experimental (this can be camerawork, mis-en-scene, editing/montage, sound, etc.);

3) speculate about what aspects of the film might continue to be of value for a contemporary film maker or video artist?

Length: 4-5 typed pages double spaced (1000-1250 words)

Include bibliography and footnotes.

First Animation/Video Projects due October 20th or 27th
(For ANIN credit)

Make a film or video using at least 4 of the techniques/strategies covered in class or the labs:

stop motion
moving camera (as opposed to fixed)
distortion (perspective, shape)
subjective/expressionist camera angle or viewpoint
abstraction
direct animation
scratch film
double exposure or collaged layers
montage/editing/rhythm
combining video and stop motion

Stop motion animation work should be 1 minute in length.
Videos or films should be 3-6 minutes in length.

Please include a list of bullets explaining which techniques were used a why.
